A shell in the sky
The very massive stars die and explode as supernovae generate shock waves of energy that destroy the surrounding dust. The photo shows what remains after one of these explosions: the shell pink at the center of the image, known as a supernova remnant N132D. The pink color is due to the clash between the shock waves and dust. In green are visible organic molecules, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, while the blue dots are stars in the Milky Way that are located along the line of sight. N132D is located at a distance of 163,000 light years, in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
