The winning strategy
The molluscs are the largest Phylum in the world with a number of species that comes to 100,000.
The "winning strategy" in their diffusion in the world is to produce large quantities of eggs to overcome the difficulties of survival of newborns.
In our sea are well known the Hexaplex trunculus egg's capsule which produce large clusters often mistaken for sponges. Each capsule contains a large number of eggs. It may therefore have hundreds of thousands of eggs in a single cluster of capsules.
