The ancient Phoenicians used it as a dye purple-blue. If left in the sun for a few minutes, the color turns into indigo blue (see H. trunculus) 12.000 molluscs were needed to extract 2 g. of dye to be used for the coloring of the tissues. Gli antichi Fenici lo usavano come colorante viola-blu che, se lasciato al sole per qualche minuto, si trasforma in indaco blu (vedi Hexaplex trunculus) Occorrevano 12.000 molluschi per estrarre 2 gr. di colorante da utilizzare per la coloritura dei tessuti. Questo spiega, visto l'alto costo della lavorazione, perchè il mantello di porpora era il simpolo della regalità.
