This means that the sound is repeated several times, giving the illusion of listening to the lapping.     Il refolo di vento che si insinua tra l'orecchio e la conchiglia, fa vibrare l'aria contenuta nella cavità della conchiglia, provocando un "rimbombo". Il carbonato di calcio che costituisce il guscio è infatti un matriale duro, sul quale le onde sonore rimbalzano più volte. Ciò fa si che il suono venga ripetuto più volte, dando l'illusione di ascoltare lo sciabordio del mare.
