Gathering ground sand and rocks
As in any other tour, a fundamental activity is the collection of samples: here we speak of the samples of soil, sand, rocks, etc.. We always carry with us plastic bags, masking tape, the one used by painters for trimming the edges of the glass, dynamometers (see next page), scoop from the field, various tins for special cases and, of course, note pad and pen. Of sand and earth always collect samples at fixed distances (eg, every 50 meters) or when we observe changes in color or appearance. Then collect various pieces of rock outcropping above the ground or loose it. Each bag is marked with a piece of tape on which to write a book on serial number and we note our observations for each number. In the days following saggiamo the samples with a magnet to verify the presence of iron (the sand of Palo contains an average of gr 150 of iron for each Kg). We check very carefully with a drop of muriatic acid, if we are in the presence of limestone. Then we measure the specific gravity using a burette graduated fill to the brim with water. We introduce a piece of rock tied with sewing thread and extract measuring how many cc of water leaked. Then we weigh the piece of rock and calculate the specific weight: specific gravity = weight in grams / displacement (in cc).
